What’s the deal with Ricky Rubio?

88009875JM016_2009_NBA_DRAFRicky Rubio, one of the most sought after point guard in last weeks draft, was selected 5th to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The wolves, had picks 5 and 6 in the draft, and when David Kahn the Timberwolves president) was asked why he took a pair a guards with the 5th and 6th pick he said, “Rubio and Flynn will play off of each other extremely well and together, we will have one of the most dynamic defensive backcourts in the NBA over time.” Hmm I don’t believe that. And here’s why, the Timberwolves took three point guards in the first round alone! Now, when the wolves were introducing their 2009 Draft Class, two of them were there. Want to take a guess who wasn’t? Bingo, Ricky Rubio. He wanted to relx one more day in New York… Good sign for the Knicks? I think so.

The Knicks made it clear that they were going to pursuit Rubio in the draft, and when they saw Minnesota take three guards in the draft, Knicks president Donnie Walsh said to himself “wait a minute, I can ask them if we can trade something for Rubio!” Eureka! Now, the next problem comes to play. Ricky’s father has told the AP that Rubio might go back to Europe for a year or two.

Really Rubio?! You were just drafted by an NBA team! It doens’t matter how many games they won last year… You are an 18 year-old drafted 5ht in the NBA Draft, don’t you feel honored? This is absurd. David Kahn was even nice to you taking you 5th. He said “We took Rubio 5th so it could financially help him with the buy out of his Spanish team”. Wow really Rubio? The guy that a year ago was playing for some Spanish team is now drafted by the National Basketball Association and decides, “eh what the heck, let me go back to Europe for a year or two”.

People won’t forget this. You are coming off as a spoiled 18 year old kid. Not even LeBron James or Michael Beasley [who were 18 at the time] were that spoiled when they were drafted, and they were drafted 1st and 2nd.

I suggest you get your act together and come play in the NBA. If you don’t like the wolves, heck, ask for a trade. Just don’t start hiding from them.. Because eventually they will find you.

Ricky Rubio is a waste of a draft pick and any money that will be thrown at him. Why waste your time and effort on a player that doesn’t even want to play in the premier basketball league in the world. The Timberwolves are eating out of this kids hand, and what are they getting out of it? How many times have these European players been hyped more so then the American players and they just turn out to be a bench warmer? Way to often. If I’m an owner, I’m drafting home grown American’s. You can always sign the International players after a few years when they have proven themselves.

  2. dirk nowitzki drafted 9th, pau gasol drafted 3rd, tony parker 28th, manu ginobili 64th!!! so keep talking about eurobench warmers and keep picking Kwame browns.
did u see the olympics? or just had ntin better to do than complain.
Ricky at the age of 17 played against team usa, and he reported that playing against kidd and paul made him realize that he could play ball at the NBA.
whatch rickys highlights on the final and u will find out that this guy has been playing proffesional ball since 14, instead of “amateur” college basketball.
people shuold watch first instead of just making opinion on just readed articles..

Those players you listed are “nice” but how many League MVP’s do they have between them? 1? Look at the list of MVP’s Dirk is the only MVP NOT from North America. You can have Dirk all you want. I’ll take the likes of Lebron, Kobe, and D. Wade any day over any of those others players you listed. The real problem is that the NBA draft can be such a crap shoot. Kwame Brown is a great example. Michael Jordan hand picked him for the Wizards and he was just awful. If MJ doesn’t have an eye for the game then who does?

I’m sorry, I’m not going to sit around and wait for a player to tell when they want to play or not. I wouldn’t of wasted my pick on that kid.

  4. You obviously have no idea about the situation and talk like an uneducated fan. Not your fault though. The truth is he can make just as much money playing for other teams in Spain that can buy his contract outright and pay him millions for a year or two of play. Plus, they have all agreed to let him go to the NBA in two years if he wishes. The NBA can only give Rubio 500G towards his buyout becuase of NBA regulations regarding overseas players.

He wants to play in the NBA (which is why he entered the draft) and has a lawsuit against Joventut, but it’s a sticky situation regarding the 6.6 million buyout that he would have to front himself if he wanted to play for the wolves next year. If he waits another year with Joventut his buyout only increases in his last year. So he has a lot to concider, which is why you hear Khan saying as much. It also hurts that the Kings didn’t pick him up like he wanted (if you were sought after as much as him, wouldn’t you like to pick the place you go?) I personally think he’ll do great on the wolves with Al and Love, but the point gaurds are going to all get chippy with each other at some point when it’s time to decide who the leader is. I think this would only delay Rubio’s curve for the NBA. He should be on a team with a vetran starter that can help Rubio make the leap slowly.

Don’t hate on the kid because you don’t understand his situation from your computer in your Mom’s house. This kid could be very nasty when he gets here with his unselfish play and passion that lacks in most players. You’ll see it when he gets here. He’s not selfish, he’s dealing with decisions that you won’t expirence in your lifetime. Concider this Rubio 101.

  5. Thanks… But i was not bashing on the kid. As you know, I like Rubio. I’m just saying what people will think of him as. I know all about his buy-out problem better than many people do.

The uneducated fan here is this “Adam the Genius” i don’t know what he is talking about. He does seem uneducated and it does feel he is writing from his mom’s house.

I on the other hand, know “Whats the deal with Rubio” much better than you.

    • Are you the one that wrote the above article Pedro? If not, my comment wasn’t aimed at you. It’s whoever wrote the article and sure, I’ll throw Adam in there too. And if you understand more about the situation with Rubio, I guess you got me. I don’t believe I left anything out. Maybe you can enlighten me on what I missed.

If you wrote this article, don’t bother enlightening me.

      • Hey B,

Thanks for your comment. I’m glad not everyone out there has the same views as I do.

One thing, there is no seed to insult me just because you don’t like an article, 8,000 other people do. so Seriously, I’m glad you don’t agree with me, but no need to insult.

There’s no need to enlighten you because we are both right.

I hope you come back for all you Heat needs.

        Pedro the uneducated fan

  6. Awww, Pedro don’t make me feel bad.: ( I had no idea you wrote the article, but I was just upset that you were leading your readers in a direction that was untrue and unfair. You should use your forum to educate the fan, not make more Adam’s.

I actually stumbled across your acticle looking for more news on Rubio. I’m sorry if I offended you, I thought you were just a kid saying you knew more than me about the situation (which I honestly wanted to be enlightened if you knew more:) But I just didn’t put you and the article together. No hard feelings.
